Where do you get your protein?

When having conversations about being vegan, the first question I get is "where do you get your protein?". Then the conversation continues as I respond,  "where do you get your protein from?", with frustration people respond, "MEAT".  I then ask,  "how does meat get their protein?". This question usually peaks the interest people as they truly don't know the answer to that question.

Why are Americans obsessed with protein? People are obsessed with protein because the meat and dairy industry have brainwashed the public believe we don't get enough protein so that we buy more of their product. However, this is a fallacy. In fact, it would be very difficult to be protein deficient unless your are not eating enough calories like people with eating disorders.  The average recommended amount of protein an adult should take in daily is 42 grams. To track my daily nutrient intake from vegetables, whole grains, and alternative meatless products, I use MyFitnessPal. From the information that I have collected, I average over 70 grams of protein a day.

How to get started?

On October 31, 2016, I made a commitment to myself and to my husband to give up all the food that I loved. The alternate choice, to die at a young age because my health was failing.  As I made my commitment, I remembered what my Mom has preached to me throughout my life,  "when you have had enough of something then you will do something about it".  I had enough of not being able to wear a bathing suit,  shop for clothes because nothing fit, waking up sick, going to bed sick, intense aching pains throughout my body, and miserable in any clothing I had on my body. As a result, I was willing to try anything because I was sick and tired of being sick and tired.

First, watch the movie Forks Over Knives or What the Health on Netflix or Amazon. Be sure to actively listen to what is being discussed in each of the movies. I had to watch both movies more than once to ensure I completely understand the premise behind whole-food, plant based lifestyle. This is not a diet, instead it is a life change. You are choosing to take charge of your health by eating foods that are derived from plants and whole foods and not a processing plant. Once you have watched the movie(s) you must look deep into your soul and decide if you are going to make a commitment to yourself  to get healthy.
